How to prompt Claude
Claude is Anthropic's assistant for writing, analysis and coding. It handles long documents well and follows detailed instructions closely, so clear structure in the prompt pays off.
- Best for
- Long documents: contracts, reports, research · Careful writing and rewriting · Coding help and code review · Step-by-step reasoning and planning
- Prompt formula
- Context + task + what good looks like + format + limits
Tips that make the biggest difference
- Put long material first, question last. Paste the document, then ask the question at the end. Claude reads the whole thing before answering.
- Wrap pieces in tags. Mark parts with simple tags like <resume> ... </resume> and <job_ad> ... </job_ad>. It keeps several inputs from blending together.
- Say why, not just what. "Keep it under 100 words because it will be read on a phone" gets better results than a bare word limit.
- Ask it to check its work. Add "Before you answer, list anything you are unsure about." It is good at flagging gaps when asked.
Weak vs strong prompt
Weak
Summarise this report.
Strong
<report>[PASTE REPORT]</report> I am a store manager with 5 minutes. Summarise this report in 5 bullets: the main finding, the 2 numbers that matter most, the biggest risk and one action for my store. Plain English, no jargon. If something is unclear in the report, say so.
Common mistakes
- Pasting several documents with no labels
- Vague requests like "make it better"
- Not saying who the reader is

What Claude does differently
- Long documents in one go. You can paste or upload long reports, contracts and papers. Anthropic's own advice is to put the long material at the top and your question at the end.
- Tags to keep inputs apart. Anthropic recommends XML-style tags such as <contract> and <instructions>. They show Claude where each pasted piece starts and ends, and which part is the question.
- Projects and styles. A project holds files and instructions for one piece of work, so you stop re-pasting the same background. A style changes how Claude writes, such as concise or formal, without changing what it knows.
- It reads pictures but does not make them. Claude can read images, charts and PDFs you upload, but it has no built-in photo or image generator. For pictures, use the Gemini or ChatGPT prompts.
If Claude gets it wrong
- It mixes up two documents. Wrap each in its own tags, such as <old_policy> and <new_policy>, and name the tags in your question.
- It cites something that is not in the document. Ask it to first copy the exact sentences it relies on, then answer only from those quotes.
- The answer is careful but too long. Give the length and the reason: "5 bullets, because I will read this on my phone". Or switch to a concise style.
- It declines a reasonable request. Say who you are and why you need it, for example "I am the HR manager writing our own policy". Context usually settles it.
- A long chat starts to drift. Start a new chat with a short summary of what matters, or keep the background in a project so each chat starts with it.
Questions, answered
Can Claude make images from these prompts?
No. Claude reads images but does not generate photos. The prompts here are for text: writing, analysis, study and code.
Do I have to use XML tags?
No, plain prompts work. Tags help when you paste more than one thing, such as a resume and a job ad, because they mark where each part starts and ends.
Why are some coding prompts on the Claude Code page instead?
Prompts for Claude Code, the agent that works on the files in your project, have their own page. The coding prompts here are for the chat: paste code, get an explanation or a review.
Is PromptUp made by Anthropic?
No. PromptUp is an independent site and is not affiliated with Anthropic.
