The six checks for a good caption
These are the rules from the AI prompts for Instagram captions and bios guide, built into the checker above.
- A first line that works as a hook on its own. Most people only read the first line before the "more" cut, so it has to carry the idea.
- No generic opening. "Happy Monday!" could open any caption on the app, so it makes yours read like all the others.
- A statement, not a question, to open. A rhetorical question is a weak opener. Put the question in the call to action.
- No em dash. Long dashes are a common sign of AI-written text. Use a full stop or a comma instead.
- One clear call to action. Comment, save, share, tag or DM: pick one and say it once.
- One to four short lines. Short lines are easier to read on a phone.
For a bio, the guide adds two more: 150 characters or fewer, and a clear next step. For ready-made prompts see high-engagement Instagram captions with hooks and the Instagram bio prompt.
How to write an Instagram caption in four steps
- Pick the kind of post and the mood. Selfie, travel, food, birthday, festival, wedding, friends, couple, gym or throwback, in a funny, aesthetic, Hinglish or confident voice.
- Tap the caption you like. It appears in the preview with the hashtags. Add a call to action or one emoji if you want them.
- Copy it. Copy the caption alone, or the caption with hashtags, and paste it into Instagram.
- Check it. Paste your own edited version into the checker to see if it still passes.

Questions, answered
Is the Instagram caption generator free, and does it use AI?
It is free and needs no sign-up. The captions are written by PromptUp for ten kinds of post and four moods, so nothing is sent to an AI service and nothing you type leaves your browser. If you want more versions, copy the AI prompt on this page into ChatGPT or Gemini.
How long should an Instagram caption be?
Long enough to say one thing. Put the hook in the first line, because Instagram cuts a caption off after about 125 characters in the feed. Then add one to three short lines and one call to action. The caption check on this page tells you which of those you are missing.
How many hashtags should I use?
Five or fewer. Instagram capped a post or Reel at five hashtags in December 2025, and it has said a few specific hashtags work better than a long list of general ones. The tool selects five for the kind of post you pick and shows eight, and you tap a hashtag to leave it out or bring it back.
Can I get Hinglish captions?
Yes. Pick the Desi (Hinglish) mood. The captions are written in Hindi with English letters, like "Chai, view aur thoda sa drama", for selfies, travel, food, birthdays, festivals, weddings, friends, couples, the gym and throwbacks.
What is a good Instagram bio?
A bio has 150 characters and one job: tell a stranger what you do and what to do next. The bio tab writes four bios in different shapes for a personal, creator, business, student or photographer account, and the bio check tells you if one is too long or has no next step.
What does the caption check look at?
Six things from the PromptUp captions guide: a first line that works as a hook on its own, no generic opening like "Happy Monday", a first line that is not a question, no em dash, one clear call to action, and one to four short lines. If you use more than five hashtags it adds a seventh check.
Are the example pictures real?
The pictures in the preview are AI-generated examples from PromptUp's prompt library. They only show what a post could look like, and your own photo is never uploaded.
