Instagram now allows only 5 hashtags: how to choose the five that matter

Short answerInstagram capped a post or Reel at five hashtags in December 2025, down from 30. Pick one broad tag, one or two specific ones, one for the place or community and one that is yours, put them after the caption, and move on.
For years, the advice was to use a lot of hashtags. Instagram allowed 30 on a post, and many accounts pasted every tag they could think of under the caption. In December 2025 that changed.
What changed
Instagram capped posts and Reels at five hashtags, down from 30. Digital Trends and other outlets reported the change in the second half of December 2025, and credited the announcement to Instagram head Adam Mosseri and the @creators account. Instagram's explanation, as those reports quote it, is that hashtags matter less for discovery than they used to, and that a few targeted hashtags work better than a long list of general ones.
A few details are still unclear, and we have not found Instagram's own announcement to quote:
- How it is enforced. Reports differ on whether extra hashtags are ignored or whether the post cannot be published.
- Stories. The coverage does not say whether the same cap applies to Stories.
- Old posts. The coverage does not say what happens to posts that already have more than five.
- Rollout. The change was described as gradual, so it may not behave the same on every account at the same moment.
The safe approach is simple: use five or fewer on everything.
Pick five, not the first five
Five is enough only if they are the right five. A simple mix works for most posts:
- One broad tag that says what the post is: for example #travel or #food.
- One or two specific tags for the niche: #solotravelindia, #homebaking or #southindianfood.
- One for the place or the community: a city, a neighbourhood, an event or a group.
- One that is yours: a name or a tag you use on every post, so your own posts collect in one place.
Examples:
| Post | Broad | Specific | Place or community | Yours |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| A weekend trip | #travel | #weekendgetaway, #hillstation | #coorg | #asha_on_the_road |
| A homemade dish | #food | #homecooking, #southindianfood | #bangalorefoodie | #ashas_kitchen |
| A birthday | #birthday | #birthdaycake | #family | #ravi30 |
| A wedding function | #wedding | #haldiceremony | #shaadiseason | #riyaweds_arjun |
Check that each tag is the right size. A tag with millions of posts is crowded, and one with only a few has no audience. The middle is usually the useful range, and you can see the count when you type a tag.
Where the hashtags go
Put them after the caption, at the end, so the first line, the part that shows before "more", stays a hook. Instagram cuts a caption off after about 125 characters in the feed, and a caption can run up to 2,200 characters in total, so hashtags at the end do not take away from the opening.
If you write your own tag, keep it short and easy to spell.
Do not let AI hand you thirty
AI tools tend to suggest a long block of hashtags, because that was the old advice. Say how many you want:
Suggest exactly 5 Instagram hashtags for this post. Give me one broad topic tag, two specific niche tags, one place or community tag, and leave room for my own tag. - The post shows: [WHAT THE PHOTO OR REEL SHOWS] - My niche: [NICHE] - Place: [CITY OR AREA] Do not suggest tags with more than a few million posts if a more specific one exists. Do not repeat the same word in two tags.
The high-engagement captions prompt is the full version for the caption itself, and the guide to AI prompts for Instagram captions and bios explains the hook, body and call to action.
A quick way to check
The free Caption Studio is built for this limit. It selects five hashtags for the kind of post you pick and shows eight, so you can swap one in or leave one out, and its caption check flags a caption with more than five. It also checks the hook, the opening, the call to action and the length.
The other limits worth knowing
- Caption: up to 2,200 characters, but only about 125 show before "more" in the feed.
- Bio: 150 characters, including spaces and line breaks.
- Hashtags: five on a post or Reel.
Quick checklist
- Five hashtags or fewer on every post and Reel.
- One broad, one or two specific, one place or community, and one that is yours.
- After the caption, so the hook stays first.
- Ask AI for an exact number, or it will give you a block.
- Check the count before you post.
