AI glow up prompts: better light, hair and styling without a fake face

Short answerA good AI glow up changes the light, background, hair and outfit, not your face. Start the prompt with "keep my face exactly the same", ask for natural skin texture, and change only two or three things at once.

"Glow up" edits are among the most common AI photo requests of 2026. Media.io's trend page lists glow-up transformations next to action figures and cinematic portraits. At the same time, a lot of people are tired of the plastic AI face: smooth skin, giant eyes, a jawline that isn't yours.

The trick is to glow up everything around your face. Better light, a cleaner background, neater hair and a sharper outfit make a huge difference, and nobody can say "that's not you".

The main prompt

Keep my face exactly the same: same features, same skin tone, same face shape. Do not slim my face or enlarge my eyes.

Improve the photo like a professional photographer would:
- Light: soft, flattering [golden hour / window] light from the side.
- Skin: even out redness and shine, but keep real skin texture and pores.
- Hair: neat and styled, same length and colour.
- Background: [BACKGROUND, e.g. a softly blurred cafe].

Notice the order. The face rule comes first, because AI tools pay most attention to the start of a prompt.

Change one thing at a time

For bigger changes, do one per step and check the face after each. Changing everything in one prompt is how faces drift.

Relight only. Use the golden hour relight prompt. Light is the single biggest glow-up. The same face looks tired under a tube light and great at sunset.

Skin only. The natural skin prompt removes spots and shine without the plastic look.

Hair only.

Keep my face and everything else the same. Change only my hair to [STYLE, e.g. a short textured crop / soft waves to the shoulder]. Make it look like a real haircut, with natural flyaways.

Outfit only.

Keep my face, body shape, pose and background the same. Change only my clothes to [OUTFIT, e.g. a well-fitted black blazer over a white T-shirt]. Realistic fabric and folds.

The before-and-after post

Most glow-up posts show both photos. The before-and-after split prompt makes one clean image:

Put these two photos side by side in one 4:5 portrait image: the first on the left, the second on the right, same size, a thin white line between them. Don't change either photo. No text.

Honest glow ups

A glow up that looks like a different person is easy to spot, and it can hurt your confidence more than help. Some rules worth keeping:

Don't change your body shape or skin colour.
Keep one small imperfection, like a freckle or a mole. It makes the photo believable.
If you use it for a dating profile or a job photo, stick to light, background and tidy-up edits. People will meet the real you.
