Diwali home decoration with AI: see your own room decorated before you buy
Published

Short answerTake a wide photo of your room in daylight, tell the AI to keep the walls, furniture and layout exactly the same, then add one decoration idea at a time: lights, torans, diyas or flowers. It shows you what works in your real space before you buy anything.
Diwali is on Sunday 8 November 2026, and decoration shopping starts in October. It's easy to spend on lights and torans that don't suit your room. AI can help: upload a photo of your real room and see it decorated first.
This works because modern image tools like Gemini and ChatGPT are good at keeping a room the same while adding things to it. You just have to say what must not change.
Take a good room photo
- Daylight, curtains open, lights off.
- Stand in a corner and shoot wide, so you get two walls and the floor.
- Tidy first, or ask AI to do it with the declutter room prompt.
The main prompt
This builds on our room makeover prompt:
Keep this room exactly as it is: same walls, same wall colour, same furniture, same layout, same windows and floor. Decorate it for Diwali in the evening: - warm white string lights along [WHERE, e.g. the top of the curtains and the bookshelf] - a marigold and mango-leaf toran over the door - brass diyas on the side table and window sill - a small rangoli near the entrance Light: evening, room lights dim, most light from the diyas and string lights, warm and cosy. Realistic interior photography. No text.
The list format helps. AI follows a clear list better than one long sentence.
Try one idea at a time
If you're choosing between options, change only one thing per prompt:
- Lights: "warm white fairy lights" vs "paper lanterns (kandils) in orange and pink" vs "LED curtain lights on the window".
- Torans: "fresh marigold and mango leaves" vs "beaded toran in gold and red" vs "fabric toran with mirror work".
- Colours: "gold and white only" for a calm look, or "magenta, orange and gold" for a bright one.
Compare the pictures side by side. It's much easier than imagining it.
The puja corner
Many families set up a special puja corner for Lakshmi Puja:
Keep this room exactly as it is. In the corner by [WHERE, e.g. the window], add a small puja setup: a low wooden chowki with a red cloth, a brass kalash, a row of lit diyas, marigold flowers and a small rangoli in front. Soft warm light. Do not add any deity images or text.
We leave deity images out on purpose. AI images of gods can come out wrong, and many families prefer to place their own murti or photo.
Balcony and entrance
Your door and balcony are what neighbours see:
- Entrance: "Keep this doorway exactly as it is. Add a marigold toran, two brass diyas on either side of the step and a round rangoli in front."
- Balcony: "Keep this balcony exactly as it is. Add warm fairy lights along the railing, two hanging paper lanterns and a row of diyas on the ledge."
Make it glow
Once you've decorated for real, photograph it at dusk. Then use the Diwali diya lighting prompt to make a short clip for your status. For a cosier look on photos, try the warm living room prompt.
Safety first
AI pictures sometimes place diyas right under curtains or on wooden shelves next to fabric. Don't copy that. In real life, keep open flames away from curtains, paper lanterns and children's reach, and switch off string lights before bed.
Fixing common problems
The room changed. Start with "Keep this room exactly as it is" and list what must stay: walls, furniture, windows.
Too many decorations. Ask for "tasteful, not crowded, three or four decorations only".
Too dark. Ask for "enough light to see the room clearly".
