How to make a resume that gets read
| Section | What to write | Tip |
|---|---|---|
| Summary | Two or three lines: your role, years of experience and strongest skills. | Match the job title in the listing you are applying for. |
| Experience | Newest job first. Three to five bullet points per job. | Start each bullet with a verb and add a number: “Cut report time by 40%.” |
| Education | Degree, college and year. Add marks or CGPA if they help. | Freshers can put Education above Experience by leaving Experience empty. |
| Skills | Group skills on lines such as Languages: Python, SQL. | Use the exact words from the job description; ATS software looks for them. |
| Projects | Name, link and one or two bullets on what you built and the result. | Most useful for students and career switchers. |
Want stronger bullet points? Use the ATS resume prompt or the other job search prompts in ChatGPT, Gemini or Claude, then paste the result back here. Remove your phone number and email before you paste a resume into any AI tool.
Resume format for freshers
If you are a student or a fresher, recruiters read your education and projects first. This order works for most campus placements and entry-level jobs in India:
- Name and contact: phone, a professional email, city and your LinkedIn or GitHub link.
- Summary: two lines on your degree, your strongest skills and the role you want.
- Education: degree, college, year and CGPA or percentage, then Class 12 and Class 10 if they help.
- Projects and internships: what you built, the tools you used and one number, such as users, marks or time saved.
- Skills: grouped on lines, such as
Languages: Java, PythonandTools: Excel, Git. - Certifications and achievements: courses, hackathons, sports or clubs, only if they fit on one page.
Keep it to one page. Date of birth, father’s name, religion, a photo and the “Declaration” at the bottom are not needed on most resumes; leaving them out gives your projects more room. Press Fill with an example above to see a finished resume. For the full walk-through, with examples for B.Tech, B.Com, BA and 12th pass, read the resume format for freshers guide, then write your resume summary and fill in your skills. No experience yet? Free resume templates: pick one that fits
Choose a template on the right of the page, then a colour to go with it. All eight are one column with real, selectable text and standard headings, so applicant tracking systems read them the same way. They differ in look, and in how much fits on a page.
- Classic: centred name and thin lines under the headings. Safe for any job.
- Modern: left-aligned, with a coloured line under each heading.
- Fresher: Education and Projects come before Experience, the order in the format above. Best for students and people with up to two years of experience.
- Compact: slightly smaller type and tighter spacing, to bring a resume that spills onto a second page back to one.
- Minimal: no lines, only bold headings. The plainest look.
- Banner: your name on a coloured band. It prints as a solid block of colour, so choose another template if you print in black and white.
- Tinted: a soft coloured strip behind each heading.
- Bar: a short coloured bar beside each heading.
If you are a student, start with Fresher. Ink or navy suits formal jobs such as banking or government; a brighter colour works for design and marketing roles. Switching template or colour never loses what you have typed. See a preview of all eight templates before you start.
Free ATS resume checker
An ATS (applicant tracking system) is the software many companies and job portals use to store and search resumes. Upload your resume above, and the builder checks it against a clear list, with a score out of 100 and a plain fix for each problem:
- Name, email and phone, plus a LinkedIn or portfolio link
- A short summary, and dates on every job or internship
- Bullet points that start with a verb and include a number
- A skills section with the keywords recruiters search for
- One or two pages, and no symbols that print as “?”
- No personal details such as date of birth
The new PDF also fixes layout problems on its own: two columns become one, tables and text boxes become plain text, and headings such as “Career Objective” become “Summary”. Match your resume to a job description
Recruiters and applicant tracking systems look for the words in the job ad. If the ad asks for SQL and Power BI and your resume mentions neither, it can be filtered out before a person reads it. Open Match your resume to a job ad above and paste the job description. The builder lists the skills and tools the ad asks for and marks which ones your resume already has.
- Requirements count for more. Skills under Requirements or Must have weigh more than those under Nice to have, and the company blurb is ignored.
- It knows spelling variants. JS counts as JavaScript, Postgres as PostgreSQL and MS Excel as Excel.
- It checks where the skill appears. A skill that is only listed under Skills is flagged, because it reads stronger when a bullet shows you used it.
- It updates as you edit, so you can watch the match rise as you add the skills you really have.
Only add skills you genuinely have. The match is a keyword check, not a promise of an interview. The ad is read on your device and never uploaded, and there is no AI involved. Tailor your resume for each job by changing the Skills line and the first bullets, not by copying the ad.

Questions, answered
Is this resume builder really free?
Yes. Every feature is free, including the PDF download, the resume upload and the ATS check. There is no sign-up, no watermark, no trial and no payment step. It runs in your browser, so it costs almost nothing to run, and it will stay free for students.
Can I download my resume as a Word (.docx) file?
Yes. Next to Download PDF there is a Word (.docx) button. It uses the same details, template and colour as the PDF, with real headings and bullet lists, so it is easy to edit in Word or Google Docs and is read correctly by applicant tracking systems. It is free and made on your device. It also keeps names written in Hindi, Tamil and other scripts.
Is there a free resume builder with no sign-up and no watermark?
Yes, this one. There is no account, no card, no trial and no watermark, and the PDF and Word downloads are both free. Your draft stays in your own browser. See how to spot the catch in “free” resume builders if you want to compare.
Can freshers with no work experience make a resume here?
Yes. Leave Experience empty and fill in Education, Projects and Skills, and add internships, college projects, certifications or volunteering. The ATS check counts projects and internships as experience for freshers.
Which resume template is best for a fresher?
The Fresher template, which puts Education and Projects before Experience. If you have more than a year of work experience, use Modern or Classic. If your resume spills onto a second page, try Compact. Every template is one column with real text, so ATS software reads them all the same way; they differ in look, not in how they are read.
Is my resume uploaded to PromptUp?
No. The resume is built by JavaScript inside your browser and the PDF is saved straight to your device. If you upload your old resume, it is read inside your browser too. Nothing you type or upload is sent to PromptUp or to any AI service.
Can I upload my old resume?
Yes. Upload a PDF or Word (.docx) file, or paste the text. The builder sorts it into the form by spotting headings like Experience and Education, dates, emails and bullet points. Check each box after uploading, because unusual layouts can put a line in the wrong place. Scanned resumes (a photo saved as PDF) have no text to read; type those in.
How does the ATS check work?
It is a checklist of what applicant tracking systems and recruiters look for: contact details, a short summary, dated jobs, bullet points that start with a verb and include numbers, a skills section, 1–2 pages, no personal details such as date of birth, and no symbols that break. The score updates as you type. Job sites each use their own software, so no tool can promise their exact score.
How does the job description match work?
Paste a job description and the builder finds the skills and tools it asks for, from a built-in list of more than 200 that covers tech, data, marketing, design, finance, HR and engineering roles, plus words the ad repeats. It then checks your resume for each one, counts Requirements more than Nice to have, and shows a match percentage that updates as you edit. It is a keyword check with no AI, and the ad is read on your device, never uploaded. Use it to spot skills you really have but forgot to write down, not to copy the ad.
Where is my draft saved?
If “Save draft on this device” is ticked, your draft is kept in this browser’s local storage so it is still there when you come back. Untick it, or press “Clear my data”, to delete it. On a shared or public computer, clear it before you leave.
Is the PDF ATS-friendly?
Yes. Both the PDF and the Word file use real, selectable text in a single column with standard section headings (Summary, Experience, Education, Skills), which applicant tracking systems read reliably. There are no tables, text boxes or images.
Does it work on a mobile phone?
Yes. Switch between Edit and Preview at the top, then tap Download PDF or Word (.docx). On most phones a Share button also sends the PDF straight to WhatsApp, Gmail or Google Drive. Nothing needs to be installed. Step-by-step: how to make a resume on your mobile phone.
Why does the download not start on my phone?
Browsers built into apps such as WhatsApp, Instagram or LinkedIn often block downloads. Open this page in Chrome or Safari and try again. On iPhone the PDF may open in a new tab; tap Share, then Save to Files.
Can I write my resume in Hindi or another script?
In the Word file, yes: it keeps letters from any script, such as Hindi, Tamil or Arabic, and Word chooses a font for them. The PDF uses standard fonts that cover English and Western European letters such as é and ü, so the builder warns you if it finds characters the PDF cannot print. If your name or text is in another script, download the Word file.
