AI prompts for job interviews: practise questions, sharpen answers and follow up
Published

Short answerAsk the AI to interview you one question at a time for the exact role, give feedback on each answer, then rewrite the weak ones using the STAR method. Finish with questions to ask them and a short thank-you email.
Most people prepare for an interview by reading the job ad twice and hoping. A better use of an evening is to practise out loud against something that talks back. AI is good at this for a simple reason: it never gets tired of asking a follow-up, and it will tell you when an answer wanders.
1. Run a mock interview, one question at a time
The mock interview prompt turns the AI into an interviewer who asks a single question, waits for your answer and then gives feedback before moving on:
Act as an interviewer for a [ROLE] position at [COMPANY TYPE]. Ask me one question at a time and wait for my answer. After each answer, give me honest feedback: what worked, what was vague, and a stronger version. Start with the questions most likely to come up for this role, then move to harder ones.
If you can, answer out loud or type quickly without editing. That is closer to the real thing than a polished written answer.
2. Build answers with the STAR method
Behavioural questions ("Tell me about a time when...") are common in both the US and UK. STAR stands for Situation, Task, Action and Result. Paste a rough story into the AI and ask:
Turn this story into a STAR answer I can say in about 90 seconds. Keep the Result specific, with a number if I gave one. Do not invent details. Story: [YOUR ROUGH NOTES]
The line "do not invent details" matters. An interviewer will ask a follow-up, and you need every part of the answer to be true and something you can talk about.
Prepare five good stories, not twenty answers. One strong story about a conflict, a mistake, a win, a deadline and a time you led can be bent to fit almost any question.
3. Ask smart questions at the end
"Do you have any questions for us?" is part of the interview. The questions to ask the interviewer prompt gives you questions about the role, the team and how success is measured, instead of generic ones you could ask anyone.
4. Before the interview: talk to someone in the role
If you have time, an informal chat with someone who does the job teaches you more than any article. The informational interview prompt helps you write the short request and a list of questions, so the person is glad they said yes.
5. Send a thank-you email the same day
A short thank-you email is still appreciated. The interview thank-you prompt writes one that mentions something specific you discussed and restates why you want the role, in four or five sentences.
6. If an offer comes
When the offer arrives, the salary negotiation prompt helps you check whether the number is reasonable, then drafts the email and a short phone script. Always check pay ranges from sources you trust for your country and industry, since AI can be out of date on figures.
