How to write a resume for an internship (with a sample for college students)
Published
Short answerAn internship resume is one page: course and year first, a short summary naming the role you want, two or three projects, your skills and any club or course work. Say why you fit this internship, and keep every claim true.
Internship recruiters know you are a student. They are not looking for years of work. They want to see that you can learn, that you finish things, and that you have a little interest in their field. A short, clear resume does that best.
You can make one in a few minutes in the free resume builder (no sign-up, PDF and Word download) using the Fresher template.
Format for an internship resume
- Header: name, phone, email, city, LinkedIn or portfolio link.
- Summary: two lines naming your course, year, the field and the internship you want.
- Education: your current course and year first, with CGPA or percentage so far.
- Projects: two or three relevant ones.
- Skills: the tools the internship uses.
- Activities: clubs, societies, volunteering, competitions.
- Courses and certificates: short list.
If you did an earlier internship or part-time job in the same area, put it above Projects.

Tailor it to the internship
The most useful thing you can do is to match your resume to the advert, because many interns apply and recruiters look for the match first.
- Use the job title in your summary ("marketing internship", "data analyst intern").
- Move matching skills first in your skills list and only keep those you truly have.
- Pick the projects that look most like the work.
- Paste the advert into the job match box of the resume builder to see which keywords it expects that you have not mentioned.
What to do if you have nothing relevant yet
- Build one small project this week. A simple website, a spreadsheet model, a poster set, a short report. Finish it and write it up.
- Take a short course and write what you did (not only that you "completed" it).
- Volunteer for something at college: a fest, a club, a survey.
Each of these gives you a bullet with a verb, a number and a result.
Mistakes interns make
- A cover letter in the summary. Keep it to 2 lines; write the rest in the email.
- "Seeking an opportunity to learn" with nothing else. Say what you can already do.
- A long list of subjects. List only those that relate to the role.
- A photo and personal details. Leave out date of birth, father's name and the declaration unless the form asks. See should you put a photo on your resume.
- File name "resume final 2 (1).pdf". Use
Firstname_Lastname_Resume.pdf. The builder names the file this way for you.
Sending it
- Attach a PDF unless the form asks for Word. Keep a Word copy so you can edit it. See Word or PDF.
- Write two lines in the email body: who you are, which internship, and why.
- On a phone, use the builder's Share button to send the PDF to WhatsApp or Gmail.

Frequently asked questions
What should I write in an internship resume with no experience?
Write your course, a short summary, projects, skills and activities. Use class projects, clubs, courses and part-time work in place of jobs, and describe each with a result.
How long should an internship resume be?
One page. Recruiters skim and one page keeps your best items easy to find.
Do I need a cover letter for an internship?
If the application asks for one, send a short one. If not, two or three lines in the email body, saying who you are and why this internship, is enough.
Can I use the same resume for every internship?
Keep a base version and change the summary, the order of your skills and the order of your projects for each internship. It takes a few minutes and helps your resume match the advert.
