Should you put a photo on your resume? What to do in India and abroad

Published

Short answerDo not add a photo unless the employer or form asks for one. A photo does not help software read your resume, and many employers prefer to see none, to keep hiring fair. When a form asks, attach a clear passport-style photo on the form, not on the resume page.

"Resume builder for freshers with photo" is a common search, and many templates have a photo box. But whether you should use one depends on where you apply, and in most cases the answer is no.

The short answer

  • Private-sector jobs and campus drives in India: a photo is usually not needed. Add one only if the company's instructions say so.
  • Jobs and internships abroad (US, Canada, UK, Australia and most of Europe): do not add one. Employers often prefer not to receive photos so they can hire fairly.
  • Government and some forms: the form often asks for a passport-size photo. Upload it where the form asks, not necessarily on your resume page.
  • Some roles where appearance is part of the job (certain front-office, aviation or modelling roles) may ask for a photo. Follow the employer's instructions.

Rules differ between employers, so the safe approach is: if the advert does not ask, do not add it.

Why leaving it out is usually better

  1. ATS software cannot use it. A picture adds nothing to the text the system reads, and it can push your text into a layout the software reads wrongly.
  2. It takes space. On a one-page fresher resume, that space is better used for projects.
  3. It can bias the reader. Many companies prefer to judge the work, not the face.
  4. File size. A photo makes the file bigger, and some portals have size limits.

If you must add a photo

  1. Use a clear, front-facing, passport-style photo with a plain background, good light and professional dress.
  2. Keep it small and place it in the corner; never let it sit in the middle of your text.
  3. Keep all details as text next to it. Do not put your name or phone inside an image.
  4. Prefer a Word file if the employer wants an editable form, and keep a no-photo version for everything else.

What the PromptUp builder does

The builder has no photo box on purpose: its templates are one column with real text so ATS software reads them correctly. If an employer asks for a photo, the usual way is to attach it on their form. If they ask for it on the resume itself, download the Word file and insert a small picture there.

Other things to leave off

  • Date of birth, father's name, marital status, religion, caste. None of these help you get a call.
  • Full postal address. City is enough.
  • A "Declaration" paragraph ("I hereby declare that the above is true"). It is not needed.
  • Two phone numbers and three emails. One of each.

The ATS check in the resume builder flags personal details and tells you to remove them.

Frequently asked questions

Should a fresher put a photo on a resume in India?

Only if the employer asks. Most private-sector applications do not need one, and your resume stays easier for software to read without it.

Do companies abroad want a photo on the resume?

In the US, Canada, the UK, Australia and most of Europe, no. Leave it out.

Can an ATS read a resume with a photo?

It usually reads the text, but a picture, especially in a header or a table, can scramble the order of the text. A resume with no photo and one column is the safe choice.

Where do I put the photo if the form asks for it?

Upload it in the photo field on the form. If the form wants it on the resume, keep it small in a corner and put all your details as text.

Is a passport-size photo the same as a resume photo?

A resume photo, when asked for, is usually a passport-style headshot: plain background, front-facing, professional dress.
