How to write a resume as a student with no work experience

Published

Short answerYou do not need a job to fill a resume. Lead with your course, then show projects, society or club roles, part-time work, courses and small wins, each with a number, on one page.

"I have no experience" is the most common reason students delay their first resume. But a recruiter hiring a student does not expect a work history. They want proof that you learn fast, finish things and can work with people. You already have that proof. You just have to write it down.

What counts as experience for a student

Almost everything you did with a goal and a result:

  • Projects: class, final-year, hackathon or self-made.
  • Clubs and societies: treasurer, event coordinator, class representative, sports captain, NSS or NCC.
  • Part-time and informal work: tuitions, a family shop, freelance work, selling things online.
  • Courses and certificates: from a real course provider, with the year.
  • Competitions and awards: quizzes, debates, sports, hackathons, scholarships.
  • Volunteering: teaching, campus drives, fundraisers.

The order for a student resume

  1. Contact line: name, phone, email, city, link.
  2. Summary: 2 or 3 lines. See resume summary examples.
  3. Education: course, college, year, CGPA or percentage.
  4. Projects: 2 or 3, strongest first.
  5. Activities and leadership: clubs, societies, volunteering.
  6. Skills: tools and languages, grouped.
  7. Certificates and awards: short list.

The Fresher template in the free resume builder uses this order. An empty section does not print, so a student with no job can leave Experience blank and it will not show on the page.

How to turn small things into good bullets

A bullet answers three questions: what did you do, how, and what changed? Start with a verb and add a number if you honestly have one.

WeakBetter
Part of the cultural teamCoordinated 12 volunteers and a Rs. 40,000 budget for the annual cultural fest
Made a website for classBuilt a 4-page website in HTML and CSS for a local bakery; 60 visits in the first week
Helped in family shopHandled billing and stock entry in a shop serving about 50 customers a day
Good at ExcelBuilt an Excel tracker for my class's fee collection (45 students)
Took an online courseCompleted Google Data Analytics Certificate (2025), 8 case studies

If you are not sure of a number, estimate honestly ("about 50"), or leave it out. Never invent one.

Common mistakes

  • Leaving the page half empty with a big gap. Fill it with projects and activities instead of padding.
  • Listing only duties. "Responsible for social media" says nothing. "Posted 3 times a week and grew followers from 300 to 2,400" does.
  • Putting your whole school history. Class 10 and class 12 marks are enough, and only when asked or strong.
  • Adding a photo, date of birth or declaration. Most employers do not need them. See should you put a photo on your resume.
  • Using a design-heavy template. A clean single-column layout is read correctly by ATS software.

Check it, then send it

  1. In the resume builder, open Check. It scores your resume out of 100 and tells you what to fix, such as bullets without numbers.
  2. Paste the job post into the job match box to see which keywords you are missing, and add the ones that are true.
  3. Download a PDF to send, and a Word file to keep. Both are free, with no watermark.
  4. Ask one friend to read it and tell you what they remember. If they cannot remember a project, make it clearer.

Frequently asked questions

What do I write on my resume if I have no experience?

Write your education, then projects, clubs and societies, part-time work, courses and awards. Describe each with what you did and the result, ideally with a number.

Should a student resume be one page?

Yes. One page is enough, and it keeps the best parts easy to find.

Can a resume for a student include school marks?

Include your degree and result first. Add class 12 and class 10 only if the employer asks for them or the marks are strong.

Is it okay to leave out the work experience section?

Yes. If you have no jobs, switch that section off. A resume with education, projects and skills is normal for a student.

Where can I make a student resume for free?

The PromptUp resume builder is free, needs no sign-up, adds no watermark and gives you a PDF and a Word file. It works on a phone.
