What you will get

You in a Pongal portrait: traditional silk clothes, a decorated pot on a clay stove behind you, sugarcane, a kolam on the ground and warm morning sun. Your face and features stay the same.

Why it works

Pongal is a harvest festival with clear symbols, and the prompt gathers them around you: a decorated pot of pongal boiling on a clay stove, sugarcane stalks and a kolam on the ground. Traditional silk or veshti clothing and warm morning sunlight match how the day is celebrated. Keeping your face exactly the same makes it a portrait of you at the festival rather than a stranger.

Common mistake

The kolam on the ground is a messy swirl.

Fix: Ask for “a simple symmetrical kolam of white rice-flour dots and lines”, and keep it small and tidy.

Also watch for

The pot is a metal vessel or has no festive decoration. Say “a new clay pot with a turmeric plant tied around its neck, milk and rice boiling over the rim”. Those details make it Pongal.
The outfit is a vague “Indian costume”. Name it: “a cream veshti with a gold-border angavastram” or “a silk saree with jasmine in the hair”.

Try a variation: milk boils over

Ask for “the moment the milk boils over, with me and family members cheering ‘Pongalo Pongal’ with joy”. It is the highlight of the festival, so it makes a lively picture.

Keep my face and features, put a turmeric plant on the clay pot, draw a simple symmetrical kolam and dress me in a cream veshti with a gold border.
