Published

Short answerUpload a clear photo, tell the AI to keep your face exactly the same, then describe the riverbank, the soop basket of offerings and the evening light. For posters, write the greeting words in quotes and say they are the only text.

Chhath Puja is one of the few major Indian festivals with no idol and no pandal. It is held on a riverbank or a pond, at sunset and sunrise, with fruit, sugarcane and thekua offered in a bamboo basket called a soop. In 2026, most calendars put the main evening offering (Sandhya Arghya) on Sunday 15 November, as part of a four-day observance running from around 13 to 16 November (SmartPuja, Shubh Panchang). A few calendars shift the start by a day, so check your local panchang if you're planning around it exactly.

It's a visual festival: golden evening light on water, diyas on the riverbank, and the soop basket piled with fruit. That makes it a good fit for AI photo prompts, as long as you describe the scene with care, since this is a religious and personal moment for many families.

Start with one good photo

  • One person, face clearly visible, not turned away or in shadow.
  • Soft, even light. A photo taken near a window works better than one in harsh midday sun.
  • No beauty filter. Filters change your features, and the AI copies the change.
  • Only use photos of yourself, or of people who have agreed to it.

The riverside portrait prompt

This is the festive portrait prompt from the library, adjusted for Chhath. Upload your photo and paste:

prompt — 1 blank
Turn this photo into a Chhath Puja evening portrait. Keep my face and features exactly the same.

Wear a [OUTFIT, e.g. a yellow or red cotton saree], standing ankle-deep in calm river water at sunset, holding a bamboo soop basket filled with bananas, sugarcane and coconut. Soft golden hour light, a few diyas glowing on the riverbank behind, gentle reflections on the water, respectful and calm mood.

"Keep my face and features exactly the same" goes first, because the AI pays the most attention to the start of a prompt. Golden hour light does most of the work in making the scene feel real rather than staged.

A fuller prompt for more control

When you want to set the pose and the exact props yourself, use this version:

prompt — 5 blanks
Turn this photo into a realistic Chhath Puja portrait. Keep my face, skin tone, hairstyle and body shape exactly the same.

Outfit: [OUTFIT, e.g. a red-bordered yellow saree], with [JEWELLERY, e.g. simple gold bangles, no heavy jewellery].
Pose: [POSE, e.g. standing with the soop basket raised slightly, eyes closed in prayer].
Setting: shallow river water at [TIME, e.g. sunset / sunrise], a few earthen diyas placed on the bank, soft mist over the water, other devotees softly blurred in the background.
Look: real photo, natural skin texture, warm low-angle light, sharp focus on me.
Shape: [RATIO, e.g. 4:5 for Instagram or 9:16 for a story].

Keeping the background devotees "softly blurred" avoids a crowd of distorted faces, which is one of the most common AI photo mistakes at a festival scene.

Lighting diyas on the ghat

For a short clip for a status or reel, the lighting diyas prompt works well with a river setting instead of a home:

prompt
Animate this photo: my hands gently lighting a small clay diya and placing it on the riverbank at dusk. Keep my face and the rest of the scene the same. Soft flame glow, a light breeze, calm water reflecting the sky, 5-6 seconds, no sudden camera movement.

Ask for "no sudden camera movement" so the clip feels calm rather than like a dramatic reel transition, which suits the quiet mood of the festival.

A Chhath greeting poster

For a WhatsApp or Instagram greeting, you don't need a photo at all. The festival greeting poster prompt handles this:

prompt — 1 blank
A festive greeting poster for Chhath Puja. A calm river at sunset, a bamboo soop basket with fruit and sugarcane on the bank, a few glowing diyas, soft orange and gold colours, peaceful mood. Clean layout with space at the top for text.

The only text on the poster, spelled exactly: "Happy Chhath Puja" and "[YOUR NAME OR FAMILY NAME]".

"The only text, spelled exactly" matters here, since image tools often add extra words or misspell a line you didn't ask for.

Fixing common problems

The face doesn't look like you. Reply with: "Keep my face identical to the original photo. Only change the outfit and background." Try a clearer, front-facing photo if it still drifts.

The water looks fake or too smooth. Ask for "natural ripples and reflections, not a mirror-smooth surface".

The basket or offerings look wrong. Name the items one at a time: "bananas, a stick of sugarcane, a coconut and a few pieces of thekua", rather than a vague "traditional offerings".

It looks like a studio set, not a real riverbank. Add "natural outdoor light, slightly uneven ground, no studio backdrop".

Change one detail per try, so you know which change helped. Our guide to editing a prompt explains this routine.

Where to go from here

If you're making photos for the wider festival season, our Durga Puja and Dussehra AI photo prompts cover pandal portraits with the same keep-my-face approach. You'll find more festival prompts in the PromptUp photo editing prompts collection, and the prompt builder can write a custom version for your own outfit and riverbank.

Quick checklist

  • One sharp, well-lit photo, no filter.
  • "Keep my face exactly the same" near the start.
  • Name the soop basket's contents specifically: fruit, sugarcane, thekua.
  • Ask for natural water ripples, not a mirror-smooth surface.
  • For posters, write the exact greeting in quotes and say it's the only text.
  • Fix one thing per try.
  • Only use photos of people who have agreed to it.
