Hosting Diwali at home: ChatGPT prompts for the menu, the budget, the timeline and the thank-yous
Published

Short answerDiwali 2026 is on Sunday 8 November, with Dhanteras on Friday 6 November. To host without chaos, give the AI your guest count, diet needs, budget in rupees and kitchen limits, then ask for a menu, a shopping list, a week-by-week countdown and a plan for the day itself, and edit it to fit your family's own traditions.
Diwali 2026 falls on Sunday 8 November. Most calendars put Dhanteras on Friday 6 November, Naraka Chaturdashi on Saturday 7 November, Govardhan Puja on Monday 9 November and Bhai Dooj on Tuesday 10 November. Check your own family's panchang for the exact puja time, which varies by city.
If you're hosting this year, you have about four weeks. AI cannot know your family's recipes or customs, but it is very good at the boring middle: counting quantities, building a shopping list and turning a long to-do list into a calendar.
Step 1: give the AI the facts it needs
The more specific you are, the less generic the plan. Gather these first:
- How many guests, and how many are children.
- Food needs: vegetarian, Jain, no onion or garlic, diabetic-friendly, nut allergies.
- Budget in rupees, and whether it includes sweets and decorations.
- Kitchen limits: one stove, no oven, a helper or not.
- Day and time: the puja, then dinner, or an open house over the weekend.
Prompt 1: the whole plan
Help me plan a Diwali get-together at home on [DATE] for [NUMBER] guests ([NUMBER] children). Food: [VEG / JAIN / NO ONION-GARLIC], allergies: [LIST]. Budget: ₹[AMOUNT] in total, including sweets, snacks and decorations. I have [ONE STOVE, NO OVEN, ONE HELPER]. Give me: (1) a menu of [3] snacks, [2] mains, [2] sweets and [1] drink, with what can be made ahead; (2) a shopping list grouped by shop type, with rough quantities for my guest count; (3) a budget split; (4) a countdown from 4 weeks before to the day itself. Ask me anything you need to know before answering.
The last line tells the AI to ask questions first, which gives better plans than a long guess. Our party planner prompt is the general version, and the monthly budget prompt can fit the spend into your month.
Prompt 2: the menu that works with your kitchen
I have one stove and a 90-minute window before guests arrive. Choose a Diwali menu for [NUMBER] guests where at least half the dishes can be made 1-2 days ahead and reheated, and nothing needs to be deep-fried while guests are here. For each dish, give the prep time, the make-ahead step and how to reheat. Keep it [VEG / JAIN].
The point is the constraint. "Make half of it ahead" is the difference between enjoying your own party and standing at the stove.
Prompt 3: use what's already in the kitchen
I already have these in the house: [LIST OF INGREDIENTS, FLOURS, DRY FRUIT, GHEE]. Suggest 5 Diwali sweets or snacks I can make mostly from these, with the one or two things I'd need to buy for each. Prefer recipes that keep well for a week.
Pair it with our recipe from ingredients prompt. Always check recipes against a source you trust. Quantities for sweets can be wrong, and sugar-syrup stages matter.
Prompt 4: the countdown calendar
Turn this into a week-by-week calendar. Diwali is on [DATE]; today is [TODAY]. Include: deep-clean zones room by room, ordering sweet boxes and gifts, buying diyas and rangoli colours, a trial run of [DISH], shopping, cooking, and decorating. Put no more than [3] tasks on any weekday and keep weekends for bigger jobs.
Link it to your family's pujas, school holidays and any travel. Share it with the people who'll help. A task with a name next to it gets done.
Prompt 5: the day itself
Write a run-sheet for Diwali evening on [DATE]. Puja at [TIME]. Guests arrive from [TIME]. List what to do each hour from noon to bedtime, including when to light the diyas, when to put food out, who is doing what ([NAMES AND ROLES]), and a 10-minute reset before guests arrive.
Prompt 6: handle leftovers and thank-yous
I'll have leftover [SWEETS, SNACKS, RICE, CURRIES] after the party for [NUMBER] guests. Suggest ways to store each, how long it's safe, and 3 simple ideas to reuse the leftovers. Then write a short, warm WhatsApp thank-you message to guests in [ENGLISH / HINDI / MIX] that mentions the gift or sweets they brought.
Our thank-you note prompt makes the messages sound personal rather than copied. For gifts, see the Diwali gift ideas guide.
Where AI should not decide
- Rituals and timings. Ask your family elders or a trusted panchang, not an AI.
- Food safety. Cooked food shouldn't sit out for hours. Use the AI's storage advice as a prompt to double-check, not as a rule.
- Allergies. Read every label yourself.
- Safety with flame. Keep diyas, candles and fireworks away from curtains, children and pets.
