Set a boundary without guilt
This prompt gives three ways to say your limit to a person about an issue, gentle, direct and firm, based on the situation and your relationship.
Help me set a boundary with [PERSON, e.g. a colleague or family member] about [ISSUE]. What is happening: [SITUATION] My limit: [LIMIT] The relationship: [RELATIONSHIP] Give me three ways to say it (gentle, direct and firm), what to say if they push back and how to follow through calmly.
State what you will do rather than what the other person must change.
Get a better result
Three ways to say it, gentle, direct and firm, plus lines for if the person pushes back and a calm plan for following through on what you said.
Boundaries are easier to hold when you have the words, so the prompt asks for gentle, direct and firm versions. Replies to pushback and a follow-through plan help when it is hard. Saying what you will do, as the tip says, keeps it about you.
The script sounds too formal.
Fix: Say who you are talking to and ask for words you would use out loud, not a letter.
- It asks them to change, not you. Reframe the limit as your action, for example “I will leave at 6”, not “you must stop”.
- No consequence is stated. Decide what you will actually do if the limit is ignored, and only include a consequence you will follow through on.
Ask for the same boundary as a short written message, for people you find easier to reach by text than face to face.
Make the second version sound more like me: shorter sentences, no therapy words, and one sentence I can say if they push back.
