Whimsical AI video prompts: small, strange and a little bit charming

Published

Short answerThe most shareable AI video clips right now aren't big spectacles, they're one small, strange idea filmed with care, such as a paper boat racing through a rainy street or a wind-up toy dancing on a kitchen table.

Not every good AI video idea needs a huge, impossible scene. Some of the most-shared clips are small: a toy, an animal, an object doing one unusual thing, filmed carefully enough that it feels like a tiny story rather than a demo. The trick isn't scale. It's giving the model one clear idea and a camera that behaves like it's actually there, watching.

These five prompts each build around a single small idea. None of them need a big setup, and most work from a blank prompt rather than a photo you already have.

A wet dog shaking off the rain

The wet dog shaking prompt is the simplest one here, and that's the point.

prompt — 1 blank
Vertical 9:16, 8 seconds. Phone video on an apartment balcony in the rain: a wet [DOG, e.g. golden retriever] shakes off water, droplets flying out in a big spray, its ears flapping, then it looks at the camera and pants happily. Natural phone-camera look, slightly handheld, grey daylight, real fur texture, nothing glossy. Sound: rain, a dog shaking, a soft pant.

"Real fur texture, nothing glossy" is doing most of the work here. Without it, AI animals tend to come out with a slight plastic sheen. This one is also fun to post as a "real or AI?" guessing clip before you reveal which it is.

A paper boat racing through a rainy city

The paper boat prompt turns a tiny object into something that feels epic, just by changing where the camera sits.

prompt — 1 blank
Cinematic vertical video. A small folded white paper boat floats down a fast, shallow rain stream along the edge of a wet city street at dusk, carrying [LIGHT, e.g. a tiny glowing candle-like lamp], passing glittering reflections of traffic lights and shop glow in the puddles, swerving around leaves and drain grates, with the low camera racing alongside at water level. Blue hour, rain ripples, shallow depth of field, soft bokeh lights. Whimsical, hopeful mood. Sound: rain, water trickle, distant traffic hush, a soft piano melody.

Put the camera at water level, racing beside the boat rather than looking down at it. A low angle is what makes a two-inch paper boat feel like it's on a real journey.

A wind-up tin robot dancing

For something more retro and a little stranger, try the tin robot dance prompt.

prompt — 1 blank
Retro surreal vertical video. A [TOY, e.g. small vintage wind-up tin toy robot] with a rusted, scratched body, round eyes and a big key on its back stands on a wooden kitchen table in warm 1970s afternoon light and stiffly dances, jerking its arms and turning in a slow circle, with the key turning and a faint spring wobble. Grainy old film look, faded warm colours, dust floating in a sunbeam, a flowery 70s wallpaper blurred behind, a shallow depth of field. Quirky, nostalgic, a little strange. Sound: tinny wind-up clicking, a soft vintage lo-fi tune, faint room tone.

Ask for stiff, jerky movement directly. A toy that moves too smoothly stops looking like a toy. Naming the film stock-style look, faded colour and grain, matters as much as describing the robot itself, which is the same trick covered in our film look guide.

A pigeon courier through an old city

The pigeon courier prompt gives the camera a job to do: follow the bird.

prompt — 2 blanks
Vertical cinematic video. A [BIRD, e.g. grey pigeon] wearing a tiny brown leather courier backpack flies low through a narrow old pink-sandstone street in a historic Indian city at golden hour, past carved balconies, hanging laundry and a sleepy shopkeeper on a stool, then lands on a window ledge and delivers [DELIVERY, e.g. a small rolled-up paper] to a hand reaching out from the window. The camera follows the pigeon smoothly at its height, warm dusty light, shallow depth of field, tiny floating dust.

A camera that tracks the subject at its own height, rather than floating above the scene, is what turns this into a story with a beginning, a path and an arrival, instead of just a flying bird.

Giant goldfish in a sunset sky

The odd one out here is scale rather than smallness. The goldfish in the sky prompt swaps the rule from the surreal video trend, where everything stays grounded except one impossible thing, for something more dreamlike and painterly.

prompt — 2 blanks
Surreal vertical video. At sunset above [PLACE, e.g. a quiet hill village of whitewashed houses], a school of [CREATURE, e.g. large glowing orange goldfish] swims slowly through the air among the clouds as if the sky were water, their long translucent fins fluttering, their scales catching pink and gold light, while a few villagers on rooftops look up and a child waves. Slow upward camera tilt, dreamy soft haze, gentle film grain, rich pink and orange sky.

Adding a human reaction, a villager looking up, a child waving, gives the viewer a cue for how to feel about the impossible thing, rather than leaving the scene to speak for itself.

What ties these together

Every one of these prompts names: one small or odd subject, a specific camera behaviour (racing alongside, tracking at height, tilting slowly up), and a plain sound description. Strip any of those three out and the clip tends to come back generic. Keep them, and swap the subject for your own idea, a different toy, a different animal, a different city.

Where to go from here

For scenes where the camera is the main event rather than the subject, see Higgsfield camera move prompts. For the related trend of ordinary places with one impossible thing added, read surreal AI video prompts. All the prompts above are free in the video generation prompts collection, and the prompt builder can swap in your own small, strange idea.

Quick checklist

  • Pick one small or odd subject. Resist adding a second idea.
  • Give the camera a specific job: race alongside, track at height, tilt slowly.
  • Say what the material is really like (real fur, rusted tin), not just what it is.
  • Add a plain sound description to sell the mood.
  • Keep clips around 8 seconds. Longer rarely holds up on one idea.
