Run five AI coding agents at once from one terminal

A dark Windows PowerShell window showing two claude --bg commands starting background jobs

Short answerAdd --bg to a claude command to start the job in the background. Type claude agents to see every session on one screen. Each background job gets its own git worktree so two agents never edit the same file.

Five bugs, five AIs, one terminal. You do not have to wait for one job to finish before you start the next.

Start jobs in the background

PowerShell
claude --bg "fix the flaky login test"
claude --bg "update the README install steps"

Each command starts its own AI session and gives your terminal back straight away.

PowerShell

Anything waiting for you shows at the top. Space peeks at a job, Enter jumps into it, and the left arrow steps back out.

Why they do not collide

Each background job gets its own git worktree, a separate copy of your project's files. Two AIs never edit the same file at the same time. You merge the results yourself when you are happy.

Limits to know

  • Each session uses your plan separately, so five jobs use more of it than one.
  • Agent view is a research preview, so details may change.
  • Review each job's changes before you merge. An AI working alone can still be wrong.

A good first try

Start with two small jobs that touch different parts of the project, such as a README fix and a test fix. Check each one in claude agents when it asks for you, and merge them one at a time.
