New Year resolutions that last: ChatGPT prompts for goals, habits, sleep and money

Short answerPick one or two goals, ask the AI to break each into monthly milestones and the smallest daily habit, then plan the week they will actually fit into. Starting in the autumn gives you a head start on January.

New Year's Day 2027 is on a Friday, and most resolutions are forgotten within weeks. The usual reason is not lack of willpower. It is that "get fit" or "save more" is a wish, not a plan. AI is good at the boring middle part: turning a wish into small steps and a schedule. You can start now, in October, so that January is a continuation and not a fresh start.

1. Pick one or two, not ten

Write down what you want in plain words, then use the goal to milestones prompt:

prompt — 3 blanks
My goal for 2027 is: [GOAL]. Today I am at: [CURRENT STARTING POINT]. I have about [HOURS] per week.
Break this into monthly milestones for 12 months, with one clear measure for each. Point out the month where most people give up and what to do then.

The question about where people give up is useful. Knowing the hard month in advance makes it easier to get through it.

Choose a starting point you are honest about. A plan for the person you wish you were rarely works for the person you are.

2. Make the habit very small

The daily habit plan prompt builds a habit around your actual day. Ask it for the smallest version, such as "put on trainers and walk for five minutes", and a rule for what to do on a bad day. A tiny habit you keep is worth more than a large one you drop.

3. Build the morning around it

If the habit needs time, it has to come from somewhere. The morning routine prompt fits it into the time you really have, with a version for busy days.

4. Sleep is the quiet resolution

Better sleep helps almost every other goal. The sleep routine prompt suggests a wind-down routine and a consistent schedule. It gives general habits, not medical advice, so see a doctor if you have ongoing sleep problems.

5. A money goal you can measure

For "save more", turn it into a number. The monthly budget planner prompt shows where the money goes and what a realistic saving target looks like. Our guide to AI prompts for budgeting goes further.

6. Plan the actual week

A goal only happens if it has a slot. The weekly planner prompt fits your goal around your fixed commitments, so you see exactly when the walk, the study session or the saving check-in happens.

Review it every month

Once a month, paste your progress into the AI and ask: "What worked, what did not, and what should I change next month?" Changing the plan is not failing. It is how the plan gets better.
