Indian art and dance AI video prompts: miniature paintings, garba and retro film

Published

Short answerTo bring an Indian art or dance style to life on video, name the exact tradition (miniature painting, garba, a 1990s film song), say what stays still and what moves, and ask for a fictional person rather than a real one.

AI video is good at a specific trick: taking a flat, known art style and animating just one or two parts of it, while everything else stays exactly as it was. Applied to Indian art and dance traditions, that trick produces some of the more striking short clips around: a miniature painting where only the peacock moves, a toy version of a garba dance, a rooftop scene lifted straight out of a 1990s film song.

The prompts below all name a specific, real style rather than a vague "Indian aesthetic", which is what makes them come out looking intentional instead of like a generic mix.

A miniature painting that comes alive

The miniature painting prompt is the most delicate of the set, because most of the image has to stay completely still.

prompt — 1 blank
Vertical video. A traditional Indian miniature painting of [SCENE, e.g. a royal garden at dusk], painted on aged paper with a decorative floral border, slowly comes to life: the painted peacock spreads its feathers, the painted fountain begins to splash, painted lotus petals sway, tiny painted clouds drift across a gold-leaf sky, and a painted prince and princess on a swing gently rock back and forth. The image keeps its flat hand-painted style with fine brush texture and rich reds, blues and gold, only the elements move, with a very slow push-in camera. Magical, calm, artistic mood. Sound: soft sitar notes, tinkling water, a gentle breeze.

Name every part that should move: the peacock, the fountain, the lotus, the clouds, the swing. Leave one out and the model may decide to animate the whole painting, which breaks the flat, hand-painted look that makes this work in the first place.

A 1990s Hindi film dance number

The 90s Bollywood rooftop prompt copies a very specific, recognisable film format rather than a generic "dance video".

prompt — 2 blanks
Vertical video styled like a 1990s Hindi film song shot. A fictional Indian man in his thirties with a feathered 90s haircut, [OUTFIT, e.g. a bright printed shirt, a leather jacket and wide-leg trousers] dances confidently on [PLACE, e.g. a Mumbai-style rooftop] at golden hour, striking a dramatic pose with a flick of the jacket, scarves and sheets drying in the wind behind him, old water tanks and apartment blocks in the haze. Slightly oversaturated warm film colours, soft glow filter, gentle film grain, a smooth slow circular camera move around him. Cheesy, joyful, nostalgic mood. Sound: a catchy upbeat 90s-style instrumental film song with dhol and synth, light wind.

Ask for "a fictional Indian man" rather than naming a real actor, and describe the haircut and outfit instead. Naming the colour treatment (oversaturated, soft glow, grain) and one camera move does the rest of the period styling. If you'd rather start from a still photo of this look, the 90s Bollywood hero portrait prompt is the matching image version.

Garba, as stop-motion toys

The toy garba dancers prompt takes a real festival dance and turns it into something playful rather than literal.

prompt — 2 blanks
Vertical stop-motion style video on a plain white tabletop. A glossy plastic toy figure couple in a generic building-block toy style, not any specific brand (a boxy toy man and woman with painted faces, chunky hands and legs), dances [DANCE, e.g. garba in a tiny circle], stepping, turning and clapping tiny dandiya sticks together in time. She wears [OUTFIT, e.g. a red and gold chaniya choli], he wears a cream kediyu with a red turban. The movement is jerky and charming like real stop-motion, with a soft studio light and a gentle soft shadow on the table, shallow depth of field, macro product look. Playful, joyful mood. Sound: light dandiya clicks, a soft cheerful folk drumbeat, a few tiny plastic taps.

Describe the toy style in words, "a generic building-block toy, boxy figures, painted faces", and add "not any specific brand". That gets you the recognisable toy look without naming a trademark. Ask for the movement to be jerky on purpose; smooth motion stops it looking like stop-motion at all.

If you'd rather see real dancers than toy figures, the navratri garba circle prompt films an actual garba circle from above, and pairs well with Navratri garba portraits for the photo side.

Keeping it recognisable, not generic

All three main prompts above share a structure worth copying for other traditions: name the specific style (miniature painting, a named decade of film, a named festival dance), say exactly what moves and what stays fixed, and describe the camera as a single, simple move rather than a cinematic sweep. Try it with a different regional dance or a different painting tradition, and keep the same three pieces.

Where to go from here

Quick checklist

  • Name the exact tradition or decade, not a vague "Indian aesthetic".
  • Say what moves and what stays still, especially for paintings.
  • Ask for a fictional person, and describe them, rather than naming anyone real.
  • For toy or stop-motion looks, say "not any specific brand".
  • Keep the camera move to one simple idea: a slow circle, a fixed overhead shot, a push-in.
