Paper cut-out animation

This prompt describes layered paper mountains and a small paper object, such as a boat, rocking on rippling paper waves in a paper cut-out style.

video-paper-cutout-animation — kling — 45 words

A charming paper cut-out animation: layered paper mountains, a small paper [OBJECT, e.g. boat] rocking on rippling paper waves, a paper moon rising, birds cut from coloured card flapping across the sky, slightly jerky stop-motion movement, visible paper texture and soft shadows, warm handmade palette.

What you will get

A warm, handmade-looking clip of layered paper mountains, your paper object rocking on cut-paper waves, a paper moon rising and card birds flapping, with slightly jerky stop-motion movement and soft shadows between layers.

Why it works

Paper cut-out animation is loved for looking made by hand, so the prompt asks for the things that give it away: layered depth, shadows between layers, visible texture and slightly jerky motion. A boat on paper waves, a rising moon and flapping birds are simple movements that read clearly at that low frame rate. The warm palette keeps it gentle, which suits stories, children’s content and calm intros.

Common mistake

The motion is perfectly smooth, so it looks like 3D animation.

Fix: Keep “stop-motion” and add “a few frames per second”, as the tip suggests. The small jumps are what make it feel handmade.

Also watch for
  • The layers look flat, like one printed picture. Ask for clear gaps between the layers with soft shadows falling from each one onto the next.
  • The paper texture disappears into clean colour. Ask for visible paper fibres, slightly rough cut edges and a matte surface on every shape.
Try a variation: city at night

Swap the sea for a paper city at night: windows cut out with light glowing through, a paper tram crossing and paper stars on strings.

Still not right? Add this and run it again

a few frames per second like real stop-motion, soft shadows between each paper layer, rough cut edges and visible paper fibres
