Write a networking message on LinkedIn
This prompt writes three versions of a LinkedIn connection message under 300 characters. You say who you are contacting, why them specifically, what you want, such as a 15-minute chat, and one line about you.
Write a LinkedIn connection message. I am contacting: [NAME, ROLE, COMPANY] Why them: [SPECIFIC REASON, e.g. their talk, post or career path] What I want: [e.g. 15-minute chat, advice] About me: [ONE LINE] Give 3 versions under 300 characters each. Be specific, do not ask for a job, and make it easy to say yes. No flattery.
Mention something specific they wrote or did. Generic messages get ignored.
Get a better result
Three LinkedIn connection messages under 300 characters, each naming a specific reason for contacting them, saying who you are in a line and making a small request easy to accept.
The message is generic, so the person ignores it.
Fix: Follow the tip: refer to one specific thing, such as a post, a talk or a career move, and say what you learned from it.
- It asks for a job or a referral straight away. Ask only for advice or a short chat. Keep the “do not ask for a job” rule, and let the relationship grow first.
- It goes over the character limit. Count the characters in the version you pick. Ask “cut it to 250 characters and keep the specific reason”.
Change the reason to “we met at an event” and add one detail from your conversation. Ask for a follow-up message that sends a useful link.
Make version two shorter and warmer, drop any praise and end with a question they can answer in one line.
