LinkedIn recommendation for a colleague
This prompt writes a LinkedIn recommendation for a manager, colleague or report, based on the specific work you saw. Use your own real experience.
Write a LinkedIn recommendation for [NAME], who was my [MANAGER / COLLEAGUE / REPORT] at [COMPANY]. What I saw them do: [SPECIFIC EXAMPLES AND RESULTS] Their strengths: [STRENGTHS] Working together: [HOW LONG AND ON WHAT] Write 120 to 160 words, warm and specific, opening with our relationship and closing with who I would recommend them to.
Specific stories and numbers make a recommendation far more credible than adjectives.
Get a better result
A 120 to 160 word recommendation that opens with how you worked together, tells one or two specific stories with results, and ends by saying who you would recommend them to.
A recommendation is read by someone deciding whether to trust a stranger, so the prompt asks for what builds trust: your relationship, specific examples and results. The word range keeps it long enough to say something and short enough to be read. Ending with who you would recommend them to gives the reader a clear use for the praise.
It is a list of adjectives.
Fix: As the tip says, stories beat adjectives. Give one example with a result, such as “cut the release checklist from two days to four hours”.
- The numbers are invented. Only use numbers you can stand behind. If you do not know the figure, describe the outcome in words.
- The ending is too vague. Replace “any team would be lucky” with a role, such as “a team that needs someone to own messy data projects”.
If they were an intern, ask for a version that focuses on how fast they learned, one task they owned and how they took feedback.
Replace two adjectives with one short story from the examples I gave, and end with the kind of team or role I would recommend them for.
