Mistral Large 4 explained: a 1-trillion-parameter open-weight model, in plain English

Short answerMistral Large 4 is a very large model from the French company Mistral. A hosted preview opened on 6 October 2026, and the downloadable weights are due on 27 October. It accepts text and images, answers in text, and the benchmark numbers published so far are Mistral's own and preliminary.

Mistral, the French AI company, opened a hosted preview of Mistral Large 4 on 6 October 2026. The Next Web's report is the source for most of the facts below. This guide explains them without jargon, and says clearly where nothing has been confirmed.

The facts in one table

QuestionWhat was reported
When did it launch?Hosted preview via Mistral's API on 6 October 2026
When can I download it?The weights are expected on 27 October 2026
How big is it?About 1 trillion parameters in total, with about 49 billion active on any one task
What can it read?Text and images; it answers in text
LanguagesTrained on more than 160, including every official EU language and Korean
Where does it run?Mistral's API, in a region you choose (including one under EU law), or on your own servers
Cost, context size, licenceNot stated in the report

"Open-weight" means the trained model files will be public so that companies can run them on their own hardware, rather than only renting access. It's not the same as "open source", and Mistral hasn't published the licence terms yet, so what you may do with the weights is an open question until 27 October.

"49 billion active" means that, for any one answer, only part of the model switches on. That keeps it faster and cheaper to run than a model that used all 1 trillion at once.

What to take with a pinch of salt

The report is clear that reinforcement learning is still going on and that the benchmarks are preliminary, and Mistral expects them to change before the weights are released. The figures reported so far all come from Mistral:

  • 62% on DeepSWE, an agentic coding test, against 61% for GLM-5.3 and 57% for DeepSeek-V4-Pro.
  • 73% on a visual-grounding test (DIOR-RSVG), against 68% for GPT-6 Astra.
  • 15% on a legal-agent test (Harvey Legal Agent), against 13% for Kimi K3.

Mistral also claims it beats Anthropic's Fable 5.1 on vision tasks, but it has not published the numbers for that claim. A benchmark score tells you a model is worth trying. It doesn't tell you it will be the best at your job.

Who should care

  • Developers and companies with data rules. A model you can run on your own servers, or in an EU region, is the main selling point. A 1-trillion-parameter model needs serious server hardware, so this is not something you'll run on a laptop.
  • Teams comparing models. If you already test prompts across models, add it to the list once the preview is stable.
  • Everyone else. If you use ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini in the app, nothing changes for you today. You can try Mistral's own chat products to see its style, but check what's available in your region first.

How to prompt a big new model fairly

Any new model deserves a fair test. Use the same prompts you use elsewhere, and judge them side by side.

prompt — 3 blanks
Task: [WHAT YOU NEED, in one sentence].
Context: [WHO IT'S FOR AND WHY].
Input: [YOUR TEXT, CODE, TABLE OR IMAGE].
Output format: [e.g. "a table with columns A, B, C", "a numbered list of 5", "JSON with these keys"].
Rules: [e.g. "use only the input above", "say 'not stated' if something is missing", "keep it under 200 words"].

This five-part shape works on every model, and it makes comparisons fair because the model has no room to guess what you wanted. If your prompts need work first, run them through the improve any AI prompt prompt.

A three-prompt test pack

  1. Reasoning with a source. Paste a short paper and ask for a summary using the research paper summary prompt. Check that every claim is in the text.
  2. Code. Give it a real function and use the code review prompt or the explain code prompt. Check whether it spots the bug you already know about.
  3. Vision. Upload a chart or a receipt and ask it to extract the numbers into a table. Check every number by hand. It's the vision claim Mistral hasn't backed with figures.

For data work, the SQL from plain English prompt is a good fourth test, because wrong SQL is easy to spot by running it on sample data.

What to do before 27 October

  1. Don't rewrite anything yet. The preview can change.
  2. Write down three tasks you do every week and save the best current answer to each.
  3. When the weights and licence are out, read the licence before building on it.
  4. If your organisation has rules about where data may go, ask whether an EU-hosted option fits.

Quick checklist

  • Mistral Large 4 opened as a hosted preview on 6 October 2026; the open weights are due on 27 October.
  • About 1 trillion parameters in total, about 49 billion active per task; text and images in, text out.
  • The benchmarks are Mistral's own and preliminary, and the licence terms aren't published yet.
  • It's most useful to developers and companies that want to host a model themselves.
  • Compare it with your own prompts, side by side, using the same wording.
