Halloween is on Saturday 31 October this year, and every October the same thing happens on Instagram and TikTok: people post themselves as vampires, witches and skeletons without buying a costume. The pictures are made with AI tools like Gemini and ChatGPT from a single selfie.

It's easy to get a result that looks cheap or too scary to share. The prompts below aim for the look people actually post: spooky, fun and realistic.

What makes a good Halloween prompt

A vague prompt like "make me spooky" gives you a random mix of fog, blood and bats. Three choices make the difference:

Then add the mood. "Playful spooky, stylish, not gory" keeps the result fun, and it also stops some tools from refusing the request.

Face paint instead of a full costume

If you want to stay closer to your real photo, ask only for make-up:

For a background, a greeting card or a phone wallpaper, try the witch's cottage prompt. It makes a cosy storybook scene with a bubbling cauldron and a black cat on the roof. It works in Midjourney, Gemini and ChatGPT. Change the colour palette line to match your party theme.

Make it move

Short clips do well on Reels and WhatsApp status. Two to try in Veo or Kling:

Suspense, not horror: the spooky hallway prompt builds tension with a flickering light and a creaking door, with no gore and no jump scares.

Fixing common problems

It refused the request. Remove words like "blood", "gore" and "scary". Add "playful" and "family-friendly".

The face changed too much. Heavy costumes can take over. Try face paint only, or say "keep my face clearly recognisable" at the start.

It looks like a cheap party filter. Ask for "realistic photography, natural skin texture, cinematic lighting".

Too dark to see anything. Add "the face well lit by warm pumpkin light".
