What you will get

A cheerful clip of a sky crowded with colourful kites over your city or region, people on rooftops tugging strings and cheering, one kite dipping to cut another, warm afternoon sun and a slow motion launch.

Why it works

Kite festivals are watched and flown from rooftops, so the prompt puts the people there, not in a park. The kite fight gives a few seconds of drama inside a happy crowd scene. Warm afternoon sun behind the kites lights the paper from behind, which is what makes them glow against the sky.

Common mistake

The kites float with no strings.

Fix: Ask for thin strings running from each kite down to a person on a rooftop, catching the sun as they move.

Also watch for
  • The sky looks empty with three or four kites. Ask for dozens of kites at different heights, and shoot up toward the sun, as the tip says, so some turn into silhouettes.
  • The cut kite simply vanishes. Ask for the losing kite to drift slowly away and down while the winning rooftop jumps and cheers.
Try a variation: fly at dusk

Ask for kites carrying small lights at dusk, with paper lanterns rising between them and rooftops lit by fairy lights.

Still not right? Add this and run it again

thin strings from every kite down to a rooftop, dozens of kites at different heights, the cut kite drifting slowly away
