Write survey questions that work
This prompt writes a survey about a topic for an audience, starting from the decision the results will inform.
Write a survey about [TOPIC] for [AUDIENCE]. Goal: [DECISION THE RESULTS WILL INFORM] Length: [NUMBER] questions Use a mix of rating scales and open questions, avoid leading or double-barrelled wording, order questions from easy to sensitive, and include an intro that explains purpose and time. Explain how to analyse the results.
Pilot the survey with three people first; confusing questions become obvious at once.
Get a better result
A survey with a short intro on its purpose and length, a mix of rating and open questions ordered from easy to sensitive, with no leading or double questions, and notes on how to analyse the answers.
Questions ask two things at once.
Fix: Ask it to check each question for “and” and split any that cover two ideas, like price and quality.
- The rating scales are inconsistent. Ask for the same scale throughout, for example 1 to 5 with the meaning of 1 and 5 written next to each question.
- The survey is too long for the audience. Set a number of questions and ask it to remove anything that does not feed the decision named in the goal.
Ask for a single rating question plus one open “why?” question that you can send every month to track change.
Three people tested the survey and got confused here: [WHERE THEY WERE CONFUSED]. Rewrite those questions more clearly.
