Midjourney V8.2: what changed, and how to prompt it

Short answerMidjourney made V8.2 the default model on 24 July 2026. It leans towards a bolder, more stylised look than V8.1 by default, and personalisation now draws from a larger pool of images. If you liked V8.1's flatter look, add --style raw to your prompt.

Midjourney set version 8.2 as its default model on 24 July 2026, after running it as an opt-in preview since late June. If a prompt that worked well a few months ago now looks different, this is likely why.

If you're troubleshooting a prompt that isn't giving you what you expect at all, see why your Midjourney prompt isn't working first. This guide is specifically about what changed between V8.1 and V8.2.

What changed in V8.2

Midjourney has described V8.2 as an update to aesthetics and personalisation, not a new set of features or a speed change:

  • Default style is bolder. Out of the box, V8.2 leans towards a more creative, stylised look than V8.1's calmer, more photographic default. If your prompts were tuned for V8.1's flatter finish, the same wording can now come back more stylised than you expect.
  • Personalisation improved. Midjourney says its taste model now draws from a larger, improved pool of images when building a personalisation profile, which matters most for accounts with a lot of ratings already in.
  • V8.1 is still the step before it. V8.1 became the default on 10 June 2026, and V8.0 was retired once V8.2 launched.

Midjourney hasn't published benchmark numbers or sample sizes behind these changes, so treat "better" and "bolder" as the company's own description rather than a measured result you can expect in every single prompt.

If you want V8.1's calmer default back

The simplest fix for a prompt that now looks more stylised than you want is the --style raw parameter, which reduces Midjourney's built-in stylisation and pushes results closer to a literal, photographic read of your words:

prompt
A frosted glass perfume bottle with a gold cap on wet black slate, soft studio light, shallow depth of field --style raw --ar 4:5

The luxury product shot prompt already uses --style raw for this reason, and it's worth adding to any prompt where you want the result to look like a specific photograph rather than an illustration.

Re-checking prompts you already rely on

If you have prompts saved from before July that you use often, run them again and compare. Two things are worth watching for:

  • A bolder colour grade or more dramatic lighting than before, even with the same words. The cyberpunk street prompt leans into this well, since the style already suits a bold finish, but a calmer, product-style prompt like the lifestyle ad prompt may now need --style raw to stay on-brand.
  • Personalisation drift, if you use a personal profile. A larger reference pool can shift results even with an unchanged prompt and an unchanged profile setting.

Don't assume these also changed

A few things people have asked about are not confirmed changes in V8.2:

  • Style reference (--sref) consistency. Midjourney's release notes don't mention a change here, so don't assume moodboards or style references behave differently than before.
  • Speed. V8.2 is framed as an aesthetics update, not a performance one. If generation feels different, it's more likely the stylisation than the render time.

Prompting for the two most common cases

When you want a literal, photographic result (product shots, real estate, portraits meant to look like a camera took them): add --style raw, and lean on specific lighting and lens language, the same way the watercolour landscape prompt names a medium and a mood rather than leaving it to the default house style.

When you want Midjourney's own aesthetic to do some of the work (illustration, concept art, mood pieces): leave --style raw off, and expect a bolder, more opinionated result than you'd have seen on V8.1. The isometric room illustration prompt suits this well, since a stylised illustration benefits from the house style rather than fighting it:

Quick checklist

  • Know that V8.2, not V8.1, is now the default as of 24 July 2026.
  • Add --style raw if you want V8.1's calmer, more literal look back.
  • Re-run any saved prompts you rely on and compare before trusting them again.
  • Don't assume --sref behaviour or speed changed: Midjourney hasn't said they did.
  • Leave --style raw off on purpose when you want a stylised, illustrative result.
