Claude Dashboards and Motion: what they do, and the prompts to try first

Short answerOn 8 October 2026 Anthropic put two beta features into Claude: Dashboards, which turn connected data into live dashboards from a text prompt, and Motion, which turns your own text, charts and images into an animated explainer you can export as MP4. Dashboards is for paid plans; Motion is for Team and Enterprise.

Anthropic launched two new beta features in Claude on 8 October 2026: Dashboards and Motion. The Decoder's report is the clearest write-up of what each one does, and this guide builds on it. We have not been able to try either feature ourselves, so everything below about how they behave comes from that coverage, not from our own testing.

What each feature does

Dashboards connects Claude to your data and builds a live dashboard from a text prompt. The Decoder names BigQuery, Databricks, Snowflake and Salesforce as sources. Two details matter if you've been burned by AI-made charts before. The dashboards refresh automatically, and "every number shows its underlying query", so you can see where each figure came from instead of trusting it blindly. Results can also be sent on to tools such as Amplitude, Grafana or Hex.

Motion makes short animated explainer videos from text, diagrams and images. The output is editable as code and can be exported as an MP4. Anthropic's pitch, as reported, is that Motion does not use a video-generation model. It writes code that animates your own words, charts and shapes, so there is no generated footage and no AI-made people, and changing a number or a caption later doesn't mean regenerating the whole video.

Who can use them

On Enterprise, Motion is reported to be off by default until an admin switches it on in Organization settings. Anthropic also said Claude Design will be merged into the main Claude app by 14 December, with a migration guide available. If you're on a personal plan, Motion isn't for you yet, but the prompts below also work as a script brief for any animation tool.

Prompts that suit Dashboards

The most useful thing you can give Dashboards is a precise question, not "make a dashboard". Say who will read it, what decision it supports and which numbers matter.

prompt — 6 blanks
Build a live dashboard for [TEAM, e.g. the sales leadership team] to review every Monday.

Data source: [TABLE OR SOURCE NAME]. Use these definitions: [e.g. "revenue = paid invoices, excluding refunds"; "active customer = ordered in the last 90 days"].

Show: [3-5 METRICS], each with the change versus the previous period, a trend line for the last [12 weeks], and a breakdown by [REGION / PRODUCT].

Flag anything that moved more than [10]% in a week. Keep it to one screen, plain labels, no jargon.

Spelling out your definitions matters more than anything else on this list. "Revenue" means three different things in most companies, and a dashboard that shows its query is only reassuring if the query measures what you meant.

For the written side, our weekly status report prompt and executive summary prompt turn the same numbers into a short note to send with the link.

Prompts that suit Motion

Because Motion animates what you give it, bring the real content: the sentences, the numbers, the chart. Ask for structure and timing, and leave the pictures of people out.

prompt — 8 blanks
Make a 30-second animated explainer for [AUDIENCE] about [TOPIC].

Use exactly this content, in this order:
1. [SCENE 1 TEXT, e.g. "Q3 revenue grew 14%"] with a bar chart of [NUMBERS]
2. [SCENE 2 TEXT] with a simple diagram of [STEPS]
3. [SCENE 3 TEXT, the one thing to remember]

Style: clean and calm, [BRAND COLOURS], large readable type, one idea on screen at a time, gentle motion, no stock footage and no people. Export as MP4.

If you want a storyboard first, the animated whiteboard explainer prompt and the kinetic typography intro prompt are good templates for planning scenes. For a still version of the same idea, the clean infographic prompt works in any image tool.

Check before you share

  • Open the query behind two or three numbers and confirm they match what you meant. This is the whole point of the feature, so use it.
  • Check who can see the dashboard, and make sure the connected data is allowed to be shown to that audience.
  • Watch the Motion preview with the sound off and confirm each caption is readable on its own.
  • Remember it's a beta. Features can change quickly, and the plan limits above come from launch coverage rather than Anthropic's pricing page.

Where to go from here

For Claude's earlier document tools, see our Claude Docs and Slides prompts, and for the same week's other big release, our Claude Haiku 5.5 prompting guide. You'll find more ready-made prompts in the Claude prompts collection, and the prompt builder can adapt any of them to your own data and audience.

Quick checklist

  • Dashboards and Motion launched in beta on 8 October 2026.
  • Dashboards builds live, auto-refreshing dashboards from connected data, and shows the query behind each number.
  • Motion makes editable, MP4-exportable animated explainers from your own text, charts and images, with no generated video footage.
  • Motion is for Team and Enterprise plans; Dashboards is for paid plans.
  • Define your metrics in the prompt, and check at least two numbers against their query.
  • Details here come from launch coverage, not hands-on testing.
