Cosy fantasy AI wallpapers: prompts for a calmer phone and desktop background

Published

A small log cabin with glowing windows in a snowy pine forest at twilight, with a trail of footprints leading toward it

Short answerName the scene, the light and a storybook or lo-fi style, and ask for a wide or portrait ratio depending on where it's going. A warm light source somewhere in the frame, a lamp, a window, a lantern, does more for the cosy feeling than almost any other detail.

Cosy, illustrated fantasy scenes have become one of the easiest wins in AI image prompting: they don't need a real reference photo, they're forgiving of small imperfections, and they make genuinely nice wallpapers. This guide has five ready-made scenes, plus what makes the "cosy" feeling actually land instead of the result looking flat or generic.

Why some cosy scenes work and others don't

The difference between a flat illustration and one that feels inviting usually comes down to three things:

  • A warm light source inside the frame. A lit window, a lamp, a lantern, a fire. It gives the eye somewhere to land and does most of the emotional work.
  • Something small and lived-in. Footprints in snow, a mug of tea, moss on a roof. These make a scene feel inhabited rather than staged.
  • One dominant palette, not several. Warm orange and deep blue together read as "cosy night". Six competing colours read as noisy.

Keep these three in mind and you can adapt any of the prompts below to your own taste.

A lo-fi study scene for a laptop background

If you want something calm to look at while you work, the cosy lo-fi illustration prompt gives you the familiar "lo-fi girl" style scene, built around your own choice of subject:

prompt — 1 blank
A cosy lo-fi illustration of a [PERSON / CAT] studying at a desk by a rainy window at night, warm desk lamp, mug of tea with steam, stacked books, city lights outside, soft pastel purple and orange palette, gentle grain, calm mood, wide 16:9, perfect as a music stream background.

The wide ratio makes it a natural desktop wallpaper. For a phone lock screen, change wide 16:9 to a portrait ratio such as 9:16 instead.

A snowy cabin for winter

The cosy winter cabin prompt is the classic "warm light in a cold, dark world" composition:

prompt — 1 blank
A cosy log cabin in a snowy [FOREST, e.g. pine] forest at night, warm glowing windows, smoke curling from the chimney, fresh snowfall, blue twilight sky with a few stars, a small path of footprints leading to the door, a lantern on the porch, storybook illustration style, peaceful mood.

The footprints are doing more work than they look like they are: without them the cabin feels unreachable; with them, it feels like somewhere you could actually walk to.

Swap winter for another season and the same structure still works: a rain-soaked monsoon forest, a cherry-blossom spring path, or golden autumn leaves around the same cabin, if you want a matching set for different times of year.

A treehouse village for something more whimsical

For a scene with more going on, the treehouse village prompt builds an entire small world into ancient trees:

prompt — 1 blank
A magical treehouse village built among giant ancient [TREES, e.g. redwood] trees, rope bridges, wooden platforms, round glowing windows, hanging lanterns, moss and ferns, soft mist with golden sunbeams, tiny villagers going about their day, whimsical storybook concept art, rich detail.

Busy scenes like this one can lose their focal point. If the result feels cluttered, ask for "a clear focal point in the centre, with the rest of the detail fading into mist at the edges" on the next try.

A wizard's tower for a single striking subject

Sometimes a single object works better as a wallpaper than a whole scene, because it keeps a clean centre for your icons or lock screen clock. The wizard tower prompt is built that way:

prompt — 1 blank
A tall crooked wizard's tower on a rocky hill, spiral staircase winding around the outside, glowing windows, floating books and lanterns around the top, stormy [PURPLE] dusk sky with lightning in the distance, whimsical fantasy illustration with rich detail.

A portrait ratio suits this one especially well for phones, since the tower is naturally a tall subject.

An enchanted forest path for something calmer

The enchanted forest path prompt trades drama for quiet:

prompt — 1 blank
A winding path through an enchanted forest with giant ancient trees, glowing mushrooms, floating fireflies, soft shafts of light through the canopy, a small [WOODEN / BRASS] door at the base of a trunk, rich green and gold colours, storybook fantasy illustration.

Keep the path leading toward the light rather than away from it. It's a small detail, but it's the difference between a scene that pulls your eye in and one that just sits there.

Fixing the common problems

It looks too busy. Pick one focal point and ask for everything else to fade or blur slightly toward the edges.

It looks flat, not illustrated. Add "soft painterly brushwork, visible texture, not a flat vector style" to push it away from a clip-art look.

The colours clash. Name two colours only, such as "warm orange and deep teal only", instead of listing several and hoping they balance.

It's the wrong shape for my screen. Change the ratio in the prompt: wide (16:9 or 3:2) for a desktop, tall (9:16 or 2:3) for a phone.

Where to go from here

If a result looks right in concept but comes out wrong in practice, our guide to why Midjourney prompts don't work covers the same fixes that apply here: a vague subject, missing light detail, or a ratio parameter in the wrong place. The image generation prompts collection has more styles to try, and the prompt builder can adapt any of these to your own scene.

Quick checklist

  • Add one warm light source: a window, lamp, lantern or fire.
  • Add one small, lived-in detail: footprints, steam, moss.
  • Name one or two colours, not several.
  • Set the ratio to match where the wallpaper is going: wide for desktop, tall for phone.
  • If it looks cluttered, ask for a single focal point with the rest fading at the edges.
